I didn't either until someone mentioned a huge exhibition of his work at Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City. It was jaw-dropping gorgeous. Gabriel Figueroa was a master of black and white light and shadow and has been credited with fathering the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. There is much to know about him so I am pointing you to his website here
Many of his works can be seen on YouTube, including the Day of the Dead classic, Macario. For the opening, view the Spanish version here. When Marcario starts chopping a tree, switch to the version with English subtitles here The first version has some great establishing shots. For the plot of the story, click here. See...you don't have to sit out in the cold. Look for beautiful B/W photography.
